Slum Village’s T3 Set to Release Solo Project One can’t talk about influential Detroit rap groups without mentioning Slum Village. At the peak of its popularity the group released a couple of notable songs, none more notable than “Selfish” which is a collab with Kanye West and John Legend who at the time were rising stars. Another track that got quite a bit of airplay is “Tainted” which is an awesome track that in part attacks the stereotypical rap image and false balling-out-of-control imagery that some mainstream rappers perpetuate.

The original group consisted of T3, J Dilla and Baatin but the lineup changed over the years due to illness, death and departure. T3 remains the last living member of the original lineup and he has decided it’s time for him to release some solo work. Unexpectedly though he mentioned that there are actually two projects in the works which are set to drop either in late 2017 or early 2018. He explained to Ambrosia For Heads that “I just feel like it was time for me to go solo because I don’t think people know about me, personally. I’m taking this time to take a break from Slum and embrace my own thing. Life is short, and eventually you gotta step out and do things on your own.” He mentioned that being a soloist will allow him to expose more of this personality and the side of him that has remained silent all these years due to his being part of a group.

He also stated that this doesn’t mean he’ll abandon Slum Village. It will always be part of him and he is actually embarking on a European tour which will feature past Slum Village member Illa J; J Dilla’s younger brother. Expected musical guests on the albums include Illa J, Frank n Dank and several others which T3 said he can’t mention yet, possibly due to behind-the-scenes issues such as clearance of verses and the like. Slum Village remains one of those groups which had its own sound, thanks in large part due to J Dilla’s layered production as well as the way in which the emcees of the group attacked the tracks. We can only wait to hear what T3 has in store for us. But if Slum Village’s repertoire is anything to go by it’s probably safe to assume that we may not hear the contemporary rap sound, which will be quite refreshing. But 2018 ain’t that far, we’re already half way through the year so the best we can do for now is wait.
